What Is an Accordion Partition?

Accordion partitions are flexible room dividers that fold and unfold like a concertina, allowing you to quickly transform spaces for different purposes. With over 70 years of heritage, Kwik-Wall accordion systems offer professional-grade durability and acoustic performance for diverse commercial applications.

Our accordion partitions feature positive latching, chrome pull handles, and multi-ply rubberized continuous sweep seals for a tight seal that minimizes sound transmission and air leakage. They're designed for easy installation in pocket or perimeter wall placements with optional manual or electric operation.

Understanding Sound Transmission Class (STC)

What is STC?

Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a single number rating that indicates how effectively a partition reduces noise transmission across a frequency range. Higher STC ratings mean better sound insulation.

Kwik-Wall accordion partitions achieve STC ratings from 35 to 40, providing effective acoustic separation for commercial applications. Here's what you can expect:

STC 35
VL-2 Model: Blocks most normal speech and conversation; raised voices still audible
STC 38
VL-6 Model: Significantly blocks conversation; muffled speech only
STC 40
VL-8 Model: Excellent acoustic isolation; speech not intelligible from adjacent space

Common Questions About Accordion Partitions

What's the difference between MK and VL series?
MK Series provides visual division only without acoustic insulation. VL Series adds sound-insulating liners on both sides, delivering acoustic separation with STC ratings up to 40. Choose MK for basic visual separation, VL when noise control matters.
How much stacking space do I need?
Stack widths vary by model: MK-X requires just 5¼", VL-2 uses 9½", VL-6 uses 10", and VL-8 uses 16". Specify your available stack space when requesting a quote, and we'll recommend the best model.
Can accordion partitions curve?
Yes. Both MK and VL Series are available with straight or radius curve tracks, allowing custom configurations to match your space's exact layout and design requirements.
What about fire safety and codes?
All standard finishes on Kwik-Wall accordion partitions are Class A fire rated, meeting stringent commercial and institutional fire safety codes. Custom materials can also be specified to meet special requirements.
